328/365 - The Difference Part 9

date October 13, 2010 location Appleton, WI

Today. This is Lawrence University's Main Hall Cupola aka the "Nipple of Knowledge" at sunset. This is an awesome place and anyone who has been lucky enough to set foot here knows it. The spider webs and people's signatures add a ton of character to what is already such a cool place to be.

Today. This shot was taken from atop Main Hall overlooking the Lawrence Campus and downtown Appleton, WI.

I have just arrived in Canmore and will be headed to Banff National Park soon. We drove in very late last night and only saw the silhouttes of the giant Canadian Rockies. Waking up this morning, I was humbled by the amazing view of these gigantic structures even from one of the more modestly priced motels in the city.

Today. Today's shot is a bit of sidetrack from my Lawrence University series. This is the nearby campus of Awrence University - a huge rival of Lawrence.

An update on my travels: I am currently in some random town in northwest North Dakota. I should be crossing the border into Canada this afternoon and am hoping to make it into Canmore by night.

Today. This is Science Hall or New Science as the cool kids called it back in the day - I just discovered that it was renamed Thomas A Steitz hall of Science. This building is closed off to science majors during the weekends - special thanks to the scientist that me in. As a math major, I had to convince one of the science professors to grant me permanent access to this building. I forget what I told him about why I wanted access, but the real reason was that most of my friends were science majors and I wanted to "study" with them.

Today. This was a fun one to capture! I believe this is a game called LARP. Anyone who has seen the movie Role Models should have an appreciation for this, and I kinda have to admit it looks a little fun. This is not an HDR image.

Today. You know a building is important when it has its own Wikipedia Page. Main Hall was built in 1853. This building is rumored to have served as an underground railroad stop prior to the start of the Civil War.

320/365 - The Difference Part 1

date October 05, 2010 location Appleton, WI

Today. Today marks the start of a new sub-series of project 365 that I am entitling "The Difference". This sub-series will contain pictures from the Lawrence University campus that were taken this past weekend. I visited the campus on assignment after some fellow Lawrentians discovered a few of my other Lawrence University shots.

I arrived in Appleton early Saturday afternoon, granted this time of day is not the best for light, the clouds were looking very nice. Upon arrival, I met with Sheree, Lawrence's director of communications, and the woman behind The Lawrence University Facebook Page. Sheree and I discussed everything Lawrence, and was hoping that I would be able to capture some of the stories behind Lawrence University and its campus via photograph. I have never been this photographically motivated! I was, after all, seeking to capture the "Lawrence Difference" through a means in which it has never before been captured - high dynamic range photography. For those of you that did not attend Lawrence, the "Lawrence Difference" is a tagline used very often on campus. Former Larry U president Richard Warch tries explaining it here. I worn you that I have not read his entire piece. I am still stuck in the first paragraph trying to figure out what "matriculation" means in this sentence (I don't see how women having their periods has anything to do with the University.) The "Lawrence Difference" to me is the reason I came here instead of the state school that all of my friends went to. So, for the next 14 days or so, I will bring you a new photo of Lawrence, and I hope to tell you a new story through each photo that I post. Enjoy!

Today. After several farm shots over the course of the last week or so, I am going back to my roots with an urban view of Chicago. The sun is starting to set dangerously close to when I leave work, that combined with the fact that I have been busier at work than usual means that you will start to see more low-light and night shots here on project 365.
